On order
Elliott Smith's first album for Kill Rock Stars is a cult classic, and "Needle in the Hay" became widely known through Wes Anderson's The Royal Tenenbaums.
Recorded at home in Portland between 1994 and 1995, this album builds on the hushed acoustic style of Roman Candle, with intricate finger-picked guitar, double-tracked whispered vocals and the occasional harmonica or drums. Smith's gift for melody already shines through.
"Needle in the Hay" is gripping and hypnotic, "Clementine" and "Coming Up Roses" are beautifully crafted, and "Christian Brothers" builds with real power. A key record in the story of one of the great singer-songwriters.
