About the album

They called her the First Lady of Song, and one listen explains it: perfect pitch, crystal diction, and a voice that could swing like a horn section or melt like butter. Ella Fitzgerald recorded some of her greatest work for Verve, and this collection gathers the highlights.

"Dream a Little Dream of Me" (her classic duet with Louis Armstrong) is pure sunshine, "Misty" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" are tender as can be, "Cheek to Cheek" with Satchmo is a joy, and "Blue Skies" and "It's Only a Paper Moon" swing like crazy. "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" shows off her way with a Rodgers and Hart ballad.

From the Savoy Ballroom with Chick Webb to the great songbook albums, few singers have ever been loved so widely. It makes a lovely gift, or a lovely treat for yourself.
