About the album

Ed Sheeran walked into the studio with "hundreds" of songs and walked out with fifteen. Working largely with Rick Rubin, and with Pharrell Williams on the funky lead single, he trimmed his notebook down to an album that moves from loop-pedal busking to slick, radio-ready pop without losing the boy-with-a-guitar charm that made people notice him in the first place.

"Sing" became his first UK No. 1 single, "Don't" his first US top ten, and "Thinking Out Loud" went to No. 1 in a dozen countries and No. 2 on the Hot 100, a slow-dance ballad that sold over 4.2 million copies in the UK alone. "Photograph" is a tender, sweeping singalong, "Bloodstream" turned into a hit remix with Rudimental, and "Tenerife Sea" and "Afire Love" show his softer, more personal side. "One" opens the record quietly, just voice and guitar.

Spotify named it the most-streamed album in the world in 2014, it went Diamond in Canada, and it broke Adele's record for the longest-charting top ten album in UK history. The title is a multiplication sign, which in hindsight was less a title than a sales forecast.
