Durand Jones & The Indications' 2019 second album American Love Call, sweet vocal-group soul with "Morning in America," "Long Way Home" and "Don't You Know."
This edition comes with a poster lyric sheet and a download card. NME called American Love Call a great American soul album, one that tips its hat to Sam Cooke and Al Green.
Durand Jones was a Louisiana native studying classical saxophone at Indiana University when he fell in with Blake Rhein and Aaron Frazer over a shared love of old soul 45s. Their scrappy debut, cut on a four-track, found fans in record stores and among the Chicano lowrider community, and by summer 2018 they were in Brooklyn making something more ambitious.
The aim this time was a true vocal-group sound, and having two lead singers makes it work. Jones brings the grit on the string-laden "Long Way Home," Frazer's falsetto melts on "How Can I Be Sure," and "Morning in America" opens the record with a warm, clear-eyed look at the country. "Don't You Know," "Court of Love" and "Listen to Your Heart" round out a set that sounds like it fell out of a 1972 jukebox.
"Morning in America" turned up on the MLB The Show 26 soundtrack in 2026, which means a new generation now hears sweet soul between innings. Frazer went on to a solo album produced by Dan Auerbach, and we suspect his falsetto has its own fan club.
