Why you'll love it

About the album

Fans waited fourteen years for D'Angelo's follow-up to Voodoo, and when Black Messiah finally dropped in December 2014, it was worth every minute. Recorded with Questlove, bassist Pino Palladino and guitarist Isaiah Sharkey as the Vanguard, it's a raw, funky, politically charged soul record steeped in Sly Stone, Prince and Funkadelic.

"Really Love" is a gorgeous, Grammy-winning slow jam with flamenco guitar, "Sugah Daddy" is joyful funk, "1000 Deaths" and "The Charade" burn with urgency, and "Another Life" closes things in lush, Philly-soul style.
