2LP of D'Angelo's 1995 debut Brown Sugar, the album that launched neo-soul: "Brown Sugar," "Lady," "Cruisin'" and "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine."
Brown Sugar went platinum, earned Grammy nominations and kicked off the whole neo-soul movement. D'Angelo was just 21 and played most of it himself.
Michael D'Angelo Archer grew up playing piano in his father's church in Richmond, Virginia, and by 21 he'd made a debut that sounded like nothing else in mid-'90s R&B: warm vintage keyboards, laid-back hip hop grooves, Al Green and Marvin Gaye-style vocals and a whole lot of soul.
The title track is irresistible, "Lady" and "Me and Those Dreamin' Eyes of Mine" are sublime, his cover of Smokey Robinson's "Cruisin'" is silky smooth, and "Higher" closes things in gospel-tinged glory. The birth of neo-soul.
