About the album

Before Hot Pink, plenty of people knew Doja Cat as the internet's resident joker. She told the Los Angeles Times she wanted this album to earn her respect as a rapper, then went one better and made a record that slips between pop, hip hop, R&B, funk and disco without breaking a sweat.

Doja co-produced alongside Yeti Beats and Tyson Trax, with Smino, Gucci Mane and Tyga dropping by. "Say So" is a silky disco throwback that ruled 2020, especially once Nicki Minaj hopped on the remix, "Juicy" is a bouncy, cheerful brag, "Like That" with Gucci Mane rides a strutting groove, and "Rules" shows off her sharpest flow. "Streets" became a sleeper hit in early 2021, more than a year after the album came out, reaching the top 20 in the US and the UK.

Seven singles in all came off it between 2019 and 2021, which is a rare kind of staying power. Most albums have a shelf life; this one apparently got a lease renewal.
