Deafheaven's 2025 return to blackgaze as a 2LP set on green & white vinyl, with "Magnolia," "Winona" and "The Marvelous Orange Tree."
This 2LP set on green & white vinyl comes in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves. BrooklynVegan and Metal Injection named it the best album of 2025, and Kerrang!, Decibel, Exclaim! and Consequence all put it in their top ten.
After the shimmering, mostly clean-sung Infinite Granite, nobody was quite sure which Deafheaven would turn up next. The answer was all of them at once: George Clarke's shriek back at full force, blast beats and tremolo guitars crashing into the band's dreamiest melodies, on their first album for Roadrunner.
Justin Meldal-Johnsen produced again, with sessions at EastWest in Hollywood. "Magnolia," the lead single, is one of the heaviest things they've ever done, and "Winona" and "Magnolia" both draw on Clarke's family roots in Mississippi. "Body Behaviour" borrows a krautrock pulse, three short "Incidental" pieces stitch the four sides together, and Boy Harsher's Jae Matthews and Interpol's Paul Banks add guest vocals. "The Marvelous Orange Tree," named after an illusion by the French magician Robert-Houdin, closes it on a huge, cathartic swell. It runs across four sides, and the quiet passages make the storms hit even harder.
Shiv Mehra, Kerry McCoy, Chris Johnson and Daniel Tracy play like a band with nothing left to prove and plenty left to say. Best played loud enough that the neighbours start using the word shoegaze correctly.
