Danzig's 1990 second album Lucifuge on translucent ruby vinyl, an indie exclusive, with "Her Black Wings," "Killer Wolf" and "Long Way Back from Hell."
This indie exclusive pressing comes on translucent ruby vinyl with a double-sided printed inner sleeve. Lucifuge pushes Danzig's heavy metal deep into the blues, with Rick Rubin producing and Glenn Danzig writing every song.
The title is Latin for "flee the light," which tells you roughly where the curtains stand in the Danzig household. Glenn Danzig and his band spent eleven months, from June 1989 to May 1990, working across three Hollywood studios, the longest he had ever taken over a record, and the extra time shows in how tight the band sounds.
Lucifuge leans hard on the blues, with a sinister edge in the spirit of Howlin' Wolf. "Killer Wolf" is Danzig's take on an old blues prowler, "I'm the One" is little more than guitar, voice and hi-hat, and "777" brings in slide guitar for a song about Armageddon. Eerie Von's galloping bass kicks off "Long Way Back from Hell," John Christ dive-bombs the intro, and the title phrase turns up in "Girl." "Blood and Tears" is a Roy Orbison-style ballad Glenn counts among his favourites.
Entertainment Weekly called the band unique and the record stronger than the debut. Danzig himself said the band had toured, hung out and tightened up in between, which is the most cheerful thing anyone has ever said about this album.
