Collective Soul's first hits collection, 7even Year Itch, covering 1994 to 2001: "Shine," "December," "The World I Know," "Heavy" and "Gel."
Craft Recordings brought this 2001 collection to vinyl for the first time, including "Perfect Day" with Elton John. It gathers the Georgia band's biggest radio hits and has sold over 500,000 copies.
Singer and songwriter Ed Roland spent years writing songs in a Georgia studio before "Shine" exploded out of college radio in 1994, and once it did, the hits kept coming for the rest of the decade. Seven years in, Collective Soul gathered them up for their first best-of, with two new songs thrown in for good measure, and it plays like a tidy history of 90s rock radio told by the people who kept it busy.
"Shine" still has that unmistakable riff, "December" and "The World I Know" show the band's softer, string-laced side, "Heavy" and "Precious Declaration" bring the muscle, and "Gel" and "Listen" kept rock radio busy in the late 90s. "Perfect Day," with Elton John on piano and vocals, comes from Blender, while "Next Homecoming" and "Energy" appear on this collection and nowhere else. "She Said," first tucked away as a hidden track, gets its moment in the spotlight too.
It reached No. 9 in Canada and went platinum here, and sales picked up again once the band started putting records out on their own label. Seven years' worth of itch, it turns out, is best scratched with a stylus.
