Coalesce's 2009 comeback Ox, the Kansas City mathcore pioneers back in full force, reissued on merge splatter vinyl with a lyric insert.
Relapse's reissue comes on merge splatter vinyl in an embossed jacket with a fold-out lyric insert. Ox was the band's first album in about ten years, the follow-up to 1999's 0:12 Revolution in Just Listening.
Ten years is a long time to leave a room this noisy. Coalesce had helped write the rules of mathcore in 1990s Kansas City before going quiet for a decade. Ox, recorded in early 2009 at Blacklodge Studios in Eudora, Kansas, picked up the thread as if the amps had never cooled. Steineger had been there since the very beginning, when the band still went by the name Breach.
Sean Ingram and guitarist Jes Steineger lead a lineup with Nathan Ellis on bass and Nathan Richardson on drums, and Ed Rose produced, engineered and mixed it. Fourteen tracks hurtle past, from the opener "The Plot Against My Love" to "Wild Ox Moan" and "Designed to Break a Man," and the album became the first Coalesce record to chart, on the US Top Heatseekers. Mike Fossenkemper mastered it at Turtletone Music.
It's a record for anyone who likes their riffs knotted and their tempos unpredictable. The title is fair warning; this is not an album that steps around the china.
