Citizen's 2013 debut album Youth on highlighter yellow vinyl, with "The Summer," "Roam the Room" and "How Does It Feel."
This Run for Cover edition is pressed on highlighter yellow vinyl, with a full-colour foldout lyric and credits insert. Youth is the debut that put Citizen at the heart of the 2010s emo and grunge revival.
Citizen started in 2009 with members split between Michigan and Ohio, put out a handful of singles and the Young States EP, then signed to Run for Cover in 2012. In February 2013 they went into Studio 4 with producer Will Yip, the man behind records by Title Fight and Circa Survive, to make their first full-length.
"Roam the Room" opens with a hard-hitting guitar part and Mat Kerekes swinging from gentle singing to raw-throated yelling. "Sleep" and "How Does It Feel" blend emo and grunge, "The Night I Drove Alone" builds slowly into a crescendo, and "Your Head Got Misplaced" drew comparisons to R.E.M. "The Summer" was the first song fans heard, and it got the first video too. Will Yip also engineered, mixed and mastered the record, and the band followed it with tours alongside The Story So Far, Man Overboard and The Wonder Years.
Critics heard Brand New, Basement and The Story So Far in it, but the coming-of-age angst is all Citizen's own. It's on highlighter yellow, so you won't lose it in the stack, though you may need sunglasses for the first spin.
