The Cinematic Orchestra's 2007 album Ma Fleur as a 45 RPM 2LP set in a gatefold, with Patrick Watson's "To Build a Home."
This 2LP set is cut at 45 RPM for extra room and depth, in a gatefold with picture inserts. Ma Fleur is certified silver in the UK, and "To Build a Home" has become one of the most used songs in film and television.
Jason Swinscoe named his band for its love of film scores, and on Ma Fleur he finally wrote the soundtrack without the film. The French title means "my flower," and the music moves like a slow, beautifully lit drama, with live jazz players, strings and Swinscoe's careful production blending so closely you can't tell where the improvising stops.
Three singers carry the story. Montreal's Patrick Watson lends his fragile falsetto to "To Build a Home," "Into You" and "That Home," soul legend Fontella Bass brings warmth and gravity to "Familiar Ground" and "Breathe," and Lamb's Lou Rhodes floats through "Time and Space" and shares "Music Box" with Watson. Instrumentals like "Prelude" and "As the Stars Fall" give the record room to breathe between the vocal pieces, and the 45 RPM cut lets the strings and double bass bloom.
"To Build a Home" went on to soundtrack films, adverts and a Neil deGrasse Tyson video watched more than nine million times. It has also been responsible for an unknown number of people quietly pretending they have something in their eye at the listening station.
