The Cinematic Orchestra's 2002 second album Every Day as a 2LP set in a tip-on jacket, with Fontella Bass on "All That You Give" and Roots Manuva on "All Things to All Men."
This English-made 2LP set comes in a tip-on jacket, with the long pieces given a side or half a side each. Pitchfork gave Every Day 8.6, and IMPALA certified it gold in 2010 for 100,000 copies sold across Europe.
Jason Swinscoe named his band for the films that ran in his head, and Every Day sounds like a score for a picture nobody has shot yet. Working with Phil France, he built the album from live jazz musicians, strings and samples, recorded across studios in London, Stockport and St. Louis, and let each piece unfold at its own unhurried pace.
Soul singer Fontella Bass, whose voice lends "All That You Give" and "Evolution" a gospel warmth, is the album's secret weapon. Roots Manuva drops in for "All Things to All Men," which borrows from John Barry's score for Petulia and stretches past eleven minutes, while "Man with the Movie Camera" gallops along on strings and drums and "Burn Out" and the title track drift into spacious, late-night jazz. "Flite" is the closest thing to a pop song here, light on its feet and lovely.
It became a cornerstone of the Ninja Tune catalogue and a go-to for anyone who likes their jazz with a cinematic sweep. Side C holds a single song, which is either very bold sequencing or simply very generous.
