Why you'll love it

This German-made pressing brings Greg Gonzalez's most focused record to vinyl, a song cycle tracing a single relationship from start to finish. Gonzalez wrote, produced and recorded it himself, and "Tejano Blue" brings a little El Paso warmth to the band's signature slow-motion glow.

About the album

Cigarettes After Sex started in El Paso, Texas, in 2008, and their sound has always been the musical equivalent of a long exposure photograph: slow, soft and glowing at the edges. The band later moved to Brooklyn and signed with Partisan in 2016. On X's, Greg Gonzalez points that sound at one story.

As one of today's big indie bands, Cigarettes After Sex takes the spotlight with their 2024 album X's. With songs like the lead single "Tejano Blue," X's concentrates on expressing a relationship that spanned four years, as opposed to some of their earlier albums, where the inspiration roamed more widely. With romantic lyrics and an ambience of hazy melodies, the album is everything its fans could ask for. "Silver Sable" and "Hideaway" drift beautifully, "Baby Blue Movie" shimmers, and "Dreams From Bunker Hill" closes in a warm fog, and "Ambien Slide" drifts off for good.

Gonzalez's androgynous croon and that unhurried reverb are all present and correct. It's a record for late nights and low lamps, and we'd suggest a dimmer switch, purely for the ambience.
