About the album

The girl from Charlemagne, Quebec had already conquered the charts in two languages by 1995. For her fourth English-language album she went wider still, hiring 14 producers and letting each of them pull her sound in a different direction, from theatrical rock to adult-contemporary gloss to French-flavoured pop.

Jim Steinman wrote and produced "It's All Coming Back to Me Now," a seven-minute power ballad that went to No. 1 in Canada. David Foster handled Diane Warren's "Because You Loved Me," the theme from Up Close & Personal, which topped the charts in the US, Canada and Australia. Her cover of Eric Carmen's "All by Myself" adds a classical piano flourish and that famous key change, and "If That's What It Takes," "I Don't Know" and "Fly" are English versions of songs from her French album D'eux, written with Jean-Jacques Goldman.

It sold over a million copies in Canada alone and made the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's Definitive 200 list. Thirty years on, the high note in "All by Myself" remains undefeated in every Toronto karaoke bar we've visited, though not for want of trying.
