About the album

Caroline Polachek spent the 2010s fronting the Brooklyn duo Chairlift and making side projects under other names, so Pang was, in a sense, the first time she signed her own work. By then she had also written for others, including Beyoncé's "No Angel." It was worth the wait: a shimmering avant-pop record that sounds like heartbreak filtered through a cathedral and a club at the same time.

She made it largely with Danny L Harle, and the two of them push her extraordinary voice into strange, swooping places. "The Gate" opens like a hymn, "Pang" and "Door" bloom slowly, "Hit Me Where It Hurts" is a sleek, aching single, and "So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings" is a perfect, breezy pop song with a chorus that sticks for days.

It set the stage for Desire, I Want To Turn Into You and a run of collaborations with Charli XCX, Flume and Oneohtrix Point Never. Five years on, the record is a little more golden, which is more than most of us can say about ourselves.
