Burial, Four Tet and Thom Yorke reunite on "Her Revolution" and "His Rope," a 12" single cut at 45 RPM.
This 12" plays at 45 RPM on an anonymous white label, just as the first copies turned up in London shops. It's the trio's first collaboration since their 2011 single "Ego" b/w "Mirror."
Some records come with a press campaign; this one came with no names on it at all. In December 2020 a handful of unmarked 12"s appeared in London record shops, and the artists and titles were worked out from the runout groove. Streaming followed a few days later, on December 11.
"Her Revolution" is slow and spectral, Yorke's voice floating over soft chords and the crackle and hiss that Burial does better than anybody. "His Rope" is sparer still, a hushed late-night piece built on gentle keys and Four Tet's patient sense of space. Both are downtempo, close and beautifully unhurried, the sound of three people who know exactly how much to leave out. Their last meeting, 2011's "Ego" b/w "Mirror," set the template, and nine years on the chemistry is just as quiet and just as striking. This 45 RPM cut gives all that space and texture plenty of room to breathe.
Two songs, three artists and no credits on the label. Somebody at XL must have had a very relaxing afternoon doing the artwork.
