The Brian Jonestown Massacre: Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request (2LP) [A RECORDS]

Why you'll love it

This A Records 2LP set comes in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves. The title tips its hat to the Rolling Stones' 1967 Their Satanic Majesties Request, and AllMusic's Jason Ankeny called the music too rich to be merely retro.

About the album

Anton Newcombe's band put out three full-length albums in 1996, and this was the one where they travelled furthest out. Recorded at Bloody Angle Studios in the fall of 1995, it's a loving, sprawling homage to the Stones at their most paisley.

Sitars, mellotrons, Farfisa organ, didgeridoos, tablas, congas and glockenspiels all make an appearance. "All Around You (Intro)" calls everyone in, "In India You" drifts and drones, Matt Hollywood's "No Come Down" and "Miss June '75" stretch out gloriously, and "Feelers" and "Bad Baby" ride the groove for as long as they please. Short interludes like "(Around You) Everywhere" and "Baby (Prepraise)" tie the four sides together like a proper late-60s listening session.

Newcombe wrote nearly everything here, and the band spent the rest of the decade proving there was plenty more where it came from. Anthony Bourdain once told chef David Chang that one of its songs was his favourite. It's a tribute album that ended up with a following of its own, which must make for an interesting conversation at the Stones' Christmas party.
