About the album

Justin Vernon has said i,i completes a cycle that began with For Emma, Forever Ago, ran through Bon Iver, Bon Iver and 22, A Million, and he called it the most adult, the most complete record he'd made. It began at April Base, his studio in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and was finished at Sonic Ranch on the Texas border.

It's a crowded, communal record, with James Blake, Aaron Dessner, Bruce Hornsby, Moses Sumney and Channy Leaneagh of Poliça among the many voices. "Hey, Ma" is the warm heart of it, "U (Man Like)" builds around Hornsby's piano, "Faith" and "Jelmore" came out as a pair, and "Naeem" swells into something close to a hymn. Pitchfork gave it Best New Music.

The band put eight of the songs online one per hour the day before it arrived, which did wonders for the album and very little for anyone's productivity that afternoon.
