Volumes: One, the first in Bon Iver's archival series, gathers eleven live recordings by the six-piece band from shows between 2017 and 2023, including Toronto's Scotiabank Arena.
This first volume of Bon Iver's new archival series comes with a die-cut inner sleeve and an artwork insert. Justin Vernon has said it's the album he'd hand to someone new to Bon Iver.
Justin Vernon's pitch for this one is refreshingly simple: if you've never heard Bon Iver, or you tried once and it didn't take, start here. Volumes: One is the band's first record outside the studio, the opening of an archival series of live shows, demos and unheard recordings, and it captures the six-piece Bon Iver at full stretch.
The tour stops read like a travel diary. "Man Like U" comes from the Forum in Los Angeles, "We" with Bizhiki from St. Paul, "Jelmore" from Jakarta, "666" from Texas and "Heavenly Father" from Milan. "P.D.L.I.F." was taped in Perth, "Hey, Ma" at Chicago's Pitchfork Music Festival, a cover of "A Satisfied Mind" in Portland, Maine, and "33 'God'" at WOMADelaide. The closer, a boardmix of "Sh'diah," was recorded right here at Scotiabank Arena in October 2019.
Vernon calls it a portrait of what the band became, and the set ranges widely, from "666" and "33 'God'" off 22, A Million to "Hey, Ma" and "Jelmore" from i,i, all reworked for six players. We're claiming the last track as a Toronto souvenir, and if you were at that show, we'd suggest you are technically on the record.
