Boards of Canada's 2013 album Tomorrow's Harvest as a 2LP set, the Scottish duo's eerie, soundtrack-inspired return with "Reach for the Dead" and "Cold Earth."
This 2LP set comes in a gatefold jacket with printed inner sleeves and a download card. It reached No. 7 in the UK and No. 13 on the Billboard 200, and scored 85 on Metacritic.
Most bands announce an album with a press photo. Boards of Canada announced this one with six strings of six-digit numbers, starting on Record Store Day 2013 with an unannounced 12-inch slipped into shops. More codes went out through BBC Radio 1, NPR, Adult Swim, a fansite and a YouTube video, and once fans pieced them together, a website unlocked the album.
Marcus Eoin and Michael Sandison recorded it at Hexagon Sun, their studio near the Pentland Hills outside Edinburgh, on carefully sourced vintage gear with real live drumming woven in. Inspired by 1970s and 80s film soundtracks, it's their most foreboding record: "Reach for the Dead" glows like a late-night VHS, "White Cyclosa" and "Cold Earth" hum with unease, and "New Seeds" and "Semena Mertvykh" take the long walk to the end.
Pitchfork named it Best New Music, and it topped the UK independent chart. Eoin has said they like working away from the city so nothing reminds them what year it is, which is also, by coincidence, our policy on the stockroom.
