About the album

Some bands take years to find each other. Blind Faith formed, recorded, toured, topped the charts and called it a day inside 1969, which is either remarkable efficiency or a very busy diary. The lineup read like a fantasy draft: Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker from Cream, Steve Winwood from Traffic and the Spencer Davis Group, and Ric Grech from Family.

They worked up songs at Morgan Studios in London and finished the album at Olympic with producer Jimmy Miller, fitting sessions around a Scandinavian tour and a US run with Free, Taste and Delaney & Bonnie. Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home" is a hushed acoustic beauty, Clapton's "Presence of the Lord" builds from gospel calm into a wah-wah storm, and the band tears into Buddy Holly's "Well All Right." Winwood's "Had to Cry Today" opens with a riff that rolls on for days, and side two stretches into Baker's 15-minute jam "Do What You Like."

Those two hits have outlived plenty of longer careers, and both have long outlived the band itself. Six songs, one summer, four legends; nobody has yet found a tidier way to make rock history and still be home for tea.
