About the album

Bill Evans is best known for the piano trio, so a session with a trumpet player in it is a pleasant curveball. In July 1962 he gathered Freddie Hubbard, Jim Hall, Percy Heath and Philly Joe Jones in New York for Riverside, and the result swings hard and listens even harder.

"You And The Night And The Music" sets off at a gallop, "When You Wish Upon A Star" turns the Disney tune into a warm, unhurried ballad, and Hall and Evans trade gentle ideas on "I'll Never Smile Again." The title track, an Evans original, gives the whole quintet room to stretch, while "You Go To My Head" and "Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams" round it out with easy swing.

The music later anchored The Interplay Sessions, whose liner notes won producer Orrin Keepnews a Grammy in 1984. As jazz titles go, Interplay is refreshingly literal.
