Bill Evans Trio's 1960 classic Portrait in Jazz, with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian: "Autumn Leaves," "Blue in Green," "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "Witchcraft."
Portrait in Jazz is the first studio album by Bill Evans' legendary trio with Scott LaFaro and Paul Motian, a group that changed the piano trio forever with its three-way conversation.
Bill Evans had just played on Miles Davis' Kind of Blue when he formed his trio with bassist Scott LaFaro and drummer Paul Motian, and instead of a pianist with accompaniment, the three played as equals, weaving melodies around each other in real time.
"Autumn Leaves" crackles with LaFaro's darting bass lines, "Blue in Green" (which Evans co-wrote for Kind of Blue) is impossibly delicate, "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "Witchcraft" swing gently, and "Peri's Scope" is a sprightly original. One of the most influential jazz records ever.
