Betty Davis's 1975 funk album Nasty Gal on clear vinyl with pink & yellow splatter, newly remastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray.
This limited pressing on clear vinyl with pink & yellow splatter was remastered from the original analog tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio and pressed at RTI, with the full support of the Estate of Betty Davis. It was her third album and her first for a major label, Island.
Betty Davis did things her own way, and on Nasty Gal she did nearly all of them herself. After two records with crack session players, and a buyout offer from Island once ABC acquired her old label Just Sunshine, she signed to Island Records in 1975 and insisted on recording with her touring band, Funk House, whose chemistry she trusted more than any hired gun's.
She produced and arranged it herself, singing in that unmistakable growl (Mills joins her on vocals for the title track) over Larry Johnson's bass, Nicky Neal's drums, Fred Mills's keyboards and Carlos Morales's guitar. The title track struts, "Talkin Trash" bites, "Dedicated to the Press" answers her critics, "F.U.N.K." is a roll call of her heroes, and "Shut Off the Light" and "You and I" slow things to a smoulder before "The Lone Ranger" rides it home.
Light in the Attic's reissues of her catalogue have brought a wave of glowing retrospective reviews and a whole new generation of fans. A woman producing and arranging her own funk record in 1975 was about as common as a quiet night at one of her shows.
