beabadoobee's 2020 debut album Fake It Flowers, a guitar-driven turn from bedroom pop with "Care," "Sorry" and "Worth It."
This Dirty Hit LP includes a download code. Fake It Flowers drew universal acclaim, scoring 81 on Metacritic, and its singles "Care," "Sorry," "Worth It" and "How Was Your Day?" set her up as a new guitar hero.
It took a Canadian to bring beabadoobee to the world. When Powfu sampled her 2017 song Coffee for his hit Death Bed, it went top 20 in more than 27 countries, and the London singer born in the Philippines suddenly had a very large audience waiting to hear what she'd do next. What she did was plug in. She had grown up on '90s guitar records, and it shows.
Fake It Flowers trades her lo-fi bedroom sound for fuzz and big choruses, drawing on '90s slacker rock, grunge and shoegaze. She recorded it with Pete Robertson of The Vaccines and engineer Joseph Rodgers, the team behind her Space Cadet EP, and occasionally asked labelmate Matty Healy of The 1975 for help with lyrics. "Care" is a stomping opener, "Sorry" goes darker, and "Together" crunches into a big, sticky chorus before the gentle closer "Yoshimi, Forest, Magdalene."
She called it pretty much her whole life in one album. The title came from her phone, which saved every demo as Fake It Flowers, and frankly that's the most relatable way to name a record we've heard.
