About the album

Bastille started as Dan Smith alone in his bedroom, writing and recording every early song himself before Kyle Simmons, Will Farquarson and Chris Wood made it a band. Their first single, "Flaws"/"Icarus," came out on a London indie as a 7-inch of 300 copies, and they made this debut in a studio Smith described as "the size of a cupboard," producing with Mark Crew.

"Pompeii" is the big one, all chanting choruses and pounding drums, and it topped the US alternative chart. Around it sit the moody title track, "Things We Lost In The Fire," the Twin Peaks tribute "Laura Palmer," the shimmering "Overjoyed" and fan-loved deep cuts like "Icarus" and "Oblivion," all stacked with layered vocals, strings and electronic beats.

Bastille took the BRIT Award for Best Breakthrough Act in 2014, and album sales jumped 132 per cent within two hours of their performance. An expanded version, All This Bad Blood, followed that November. Not bad for a band that started in a cupboard; ours is still full of mops.
