Amyl and the Sniffers' 2021 second album Comfort to Me, Melbourne pub punk at full volume: "Guided by Angels," "Security" and "Hertz."
Comfort to Me on vinyl comes in a gatefold with a lyric inner sleeve and download card. It hit No. 2 in Australia, won the AIR Award for Best Independent Punk Album and drew universal acclaim, with a 5/5 from Kerrang!
Amyl and the Sniffers started as housemates in Balaclava, Melbourne, who wrote and recorded their first EP in 12 hours. By their second album they'd learned to take a little longer, though you'd never guess it from how fast these 13 songs go by. The album was due in October 2021 and then got pushed up to September, which suits a band in this much of a hurry.
The band produced it with Dan Luscombe at Soundpark in Melbourne, Nick Launay mixed it and Bernie Grundman mastered it, so the crunch is enormous and clean. Amy Taylor leads from the front: "Guided by Angels" kicks the door in, "Security" is a stomping pub-rock singalong, "Hertz" daydreams about getting out of the city, and "Freaks to the Front" and "Knifey" show the range. The sound nods to 1970s punk, the Stooges and AC/DC, with Taylor's own wit all over it, and Mehrtens, Wilson and Romer keep the whole thing tight.
The record took them onto bills with Green Day, Foo Fighters and, eventually, AC/DC on their Australian tour. Quite the promotion for a band that once made an entire EP in less time than it takes us to price a box of 45s.
