About the album

Alicia Keys spent the years before this album judging other singers on The Voice, then took leave from the show to get back to her own. She recorded Alicia largely at Jungle City Studios in New York with her longtime engineer Ann Mincieli, and wrote her memoir More Myself at the same time, calling the two projects the best therapy she'd ever had.

It is her most collaborative record. Swizz Beatz, Ludwig Göransson, Ryan Tedder, Ed Sheeran and The-Dream all had a hand in the writing and production, and the guests run from Miguel on "Show Me Love" and Sampha on "3 Hour Drive" to Khalid on "So Done" and Tierra Whack on "Me X 7." "Underdog" is a warm, strummy anthem, "Time Machine" slides into funk, and "Good Job" closes with a thank-you that landed with essential workers in 2020.

Critics praised her nuanced vocals and the album's broad warmth, which mixes piano ballads with orchestral pop, soul and Caribbean touches. Somewhere in the middle sits a song called "Jill Scott" featuring Jill Scott, which is about as clear as album credits get.
