About the album

Most artists treat MTV Unplugged as a greatest hits night with the amps turned off. Alicia Keys used hers to write new songs, rework old ones and invite friends, taping the show at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on July 14, 2005, at the end of the Diary Tour.

Musical director Onree Gill rearranged everything for a full band with horns and strings. "Karma" and "Heartburn" get a rich new swing, "If I Ain't Got You" and "Diary" glow at the piano, and "Unbreakable," written for the night, became a top-five R&B hit. She covers Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me" and The Rolling Stones' "Wild Horses" (with Adam Levine), and closes on "Love It Or Leave It Alone / Welcome To Jamrock" with Mos Def, Common and Damian Marley. Between songs she talks, laughs and plays like someone among friends, which is exactly how it feels from the couch.

It earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album and sold 1.5 million copies around the world. Twenty years on, it still sounds like the best seat in the house, minus the queue for the coat check.
