Adele's 2015 "make-up record": "Hello," "When We Were Young" and "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)." Single LP on XL.
25 sold more copies in its first week than any album before it in the US, and "Hello" became the fastest-selling digital single in US history. It swept the Grammys, winning Album of the Year.
After 21 turned Adele into the biggest pop star on the planet, she disappeared for four years, had a baby and came back with what she called a "make-up record": an album about yearning for her younger self, about time slipping past and about the people you hurt along the way. 25 arrived in November of 2015 and promptly broke just about every sales record in existence.
"Hello" is the big one, a towering, phone-in-hand ballad that racked up a million US downloads in a week, but the album is more varied than its reputation suggests: the Max Martin-co-written "Send My Love (To Your New Lover)" bounces, "Water Under the Bridge" has a little '80s R&B shimmer, and "When We Were Young" might be the best thing she's ever sung. It took home Album of the Year at the Grammys, and it still sounds like Sunday night with a glass of wine.
