Van Morrison's transcendent 1968 masterpiece Astral Weeks, a song cycle of folk, jazz and soul: "Sweet Thing," "Madame George," "Cyprus Avenue" and "The Way Young Lovers Do."
Astral Weeks is regularly named among the greatest albums ever made, a spellbinding, improvised-feeling record unlike anything else in rock.
Recorded in New York in the fall of 1968 with jazz players including bassist Richard Davis and guitarist Jay Berliner, Astral Weeks left the pop of "Brown Eyed Girl" far behind for long, flowing, impressionistic songs of memory, Belfast streets and longing.
"Sweet Thing" is pure rapture, "Madame George" is a hypnotic ten-minute reverie, "Cyprus Avenue" and "Ballerina" soar, and "The Way Young Lovers Do" swings like a jazz waltz.
