Tycho's 2011 album Dive as a 10th anniversary 2LP set on orange & red vinyl, with "A Walk," "Hours" and "Elegy."
This 10th anniversary reissue spreads Dive across a 2LP set on orange & red vinyl. Scott Hansen spent around five years making it, and it landed on Billboard's Top Dance/Electronic Albums and Heatseekers charts.
Scott Hansen is a designer by trade, which goes some way to explaining why Tycho records look and sound like a sunset you'd frame. Dive, his second album as Tycho, took the best part of five years, much of it spent writing on acoustic guitar and then going over every detail by hand, building each song from a 16-bar melody and bass line outward.
It was the first Tycho record made with outboard gear, analog delays and microphone-recorded instruments, and you can hear the extra air. "A Walk" and "Hours" open with that bright, tape-warmed glow, the title track (the one song Hansen started on a software synth) drifts in slow motion, and "Adrift," the first piece written, and "Elegy," the last, bookend the whole project. Zac Brown, Matt McCord and Dusty Brown add guitar and bass parts along the way.
Hansen cited DJ Shadow and progressive rock as models for songs that travel through several ideas at once, and described the finished album as artifacts from a future that has more in common with our past than our present. It's the record that set the template for the Tycho sound, and frankly the most productive way we know to spend a rainy Sunday doing absolutely nothing.
