About the album

Some albums arrive with a big statement. Trouble at the Henhouse arrived with a gentle one, a quiet little song about growing up called "Ahead By A Century," and it became one of the most loved songs in Canadian music. The album debuted at No. 1 and stayed there for four weeks.

"Gift Shop" opens with a long, spacious build, "Springtime In Vienna" and "Flamenco" drift dreamily, and "700 Ft. Ceiling" and "Butts Wiggling" bring the guitars back up. Gord Downie's lyrics find beauty in small moments while asking big questions, and Johnny Fay adds a LinnDrum to "Ahead By A Century" for that gentle pulse.

It also took Rock Album of the Year at the 1997 Junos. The Hip closed their final concert in Kingston with "Ahead By A Century," which is why it's very hard to sell this record without someone at the counter getting a bit misty.
