The Tragically Hip's 1994 album Day For Night as a remastered 2LP set on 180g vinyl: "Grace, Too," "Nautical Disaster" and "Scared."
This 2LP set spreads Day For Night over four sides of remastered 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket. It was the Hip's first album to debut at No. 1 in Canada, selling 300,000 copies in four days, and it has gone 7x platinum here.
Day For Night takes its name from the film trick of shooting in daylight and darkening it to look like night, and it suits the record: The Tragically Hip turned their stadium-sized rock moodier and more mysterious, and Canada lapped it up. It sold 300,000 copies in four days.
"Grace, Too" opens with that slow-burning menace, "Nautical Disaster" is one of Gord Downie's most vivid stories, and "Scared," "Greasy Jungle" and "So Hard Done By" became radio staples. Recorded partly at Kingsway Studio in New Orleans and at home in Kingston, with Mark Howard producing alongside the band, it has a humid, haunted sound all its own.
Dan Aykroyd talked Saturday Night Live into booking the band in 1995, then turned up himself to introduce them; they played "Grace, Too" and "Nautical Disaster." Getting a Ghostbuster to do your introductions is what's known in the trade as having friends in the right places.
