Tom Petty's 1989 solo debut Full Moon Fever, co-produced with Jeff Lynne, as a 180g reissue with "Free Fallin'," "I Won't Back Down" and "Runnin' Down a Dream."
Chris Bellman cut this 180g pressing from the analog master tapes at Bernie Grundman Mastering, and it comes with a printed inner sleeve. Full Moon Fever reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and went 5x platinum in the US and 6x platinum in Canada.
Tom Petty's first album without the Heartbreakers' name on the front was meant as a bit of a holiday. He'd been writing with Jeff Lynne, the pair clicked, and with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell in tow they started cutting songs in 1987 and 1988, mostly in Campbell's garage studio.
Lynne co-wrote most of the songs with Petty, co-produced with Petty and Campbell, and played bass, piano and keyboards, giving everything that bright, chiming polish, while Campbell played a little of everything and engineered. "Free Fallin'" became one of the great Southern California songs, "I Won't Back Down" features George Harrison on acoustic guitar and backing vocals, and "Runnin' Down a Dream" is pure open-road propulsion. Petty covers Gene Clark's "Feel a Whole Lot Better," "A Face in the Crowd" drifts beautifully, and Roy Orbison sings backing vocals on "Zombie Zoo."
It entered the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2019 and sits on Rolling Stone's 500 greatest albums list. Most of it was cut in Mike Campbell's garage, which has quietly put every other garage in North America on notice.
