1989 debut from the Stone Roses, the Madchester masterpiece: "I Wanna Be Adored," "She Bangs the Drums," "Made of Stone" and "I Am the Resurrection."
The Stone Roses' debut is one of the most loved British albums ever, regularly ranked near the top of all-time lists, and it has sold over four million copies. "I Wanna Be Adored" and "I Am the Resurrection" are pure swagger.
The Stone Roses were the swaggering kings of Manchester's Madchester scene, and their debut, produced by John Leckie at Battery Studios in London, is the sound of a band who knew they were the best in the world. John Squire's chiming, psychedelic guitar, Mani's melodic bass, Reni's loose, funky drumming and Ian Brown's laid-back vocals came together like magic.
"I Wanna Be Adored" builds from a hum to a roar, "She Bangs the Drums" and "Made of Stone" are perfect jangling pop, "Waterfall" shimmers, and the closing "I Am the Resurrection" stretches into an eight-minute groove that still sets dance floors alight. It wasn't an instant hit, but its legend has only grown.
