About the album

The Killers started writing Day & Age on the road during the Sam's Town tour, and they clearly packed light. Where its predecessor went for Springsteen-sized Americana, this one lets the synths, saxophones and steel drums in, and Brandon Flowers called it the band's most playful record. It still sounds like Las Vegas at night, all neon and big feelings, filtered through a love of British synth-pop.

Producer Stuart Price had remixed the band before he ever met them. When they finally sat down to dinner in London in 2006, they went back to his home studio afterwards and recorded "Human" in two hours. The rest came together by internet, with demos flying between Las Vegas and London. "Spaceman" is a giddy disco rocket, "A Dustland Fairytale" is a sweeping, heart-on-sleeve ballad, "Losing Touch" opens on a horn blast, and "Joy Ride" and "Neon Tiger" bring the dance floor. Paul Normansell's portrait cover was named the best album cover of 2008 by Rolling Stone.

Flowers described the album as Sam's Town seen from Mars, which may be the most useful set of directions anyone has ever given for a record.
