About the album

Six months is not long between albums, but The Jam were in a hurry in 1977. Paul Weller, Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler followed In the City with this second set in November, working again with producers Vic Coppersmith-Heaven and Chris Parry, and posed for the cover under London's Westway for photographer Gered Mankowitz.

"The Modern World" opens as a snappy mission statement, and the album leans further into the mod side of the band, with more shade and texture than the debut. Foxton steps up with two songs of his own, "London Traffic" and "Don't Tell Them You're Sane," "Life from a Window" and "Tonight at Noon" show Weller's tender side, and "In the Street, Today" was co-written with his friend Dave Waller. They tip their hats to Stax with a cover of "In the Midnight Hour." The bonus sides add BBC sessions, with "Art School," "Carnaby Street" and "Bricks and Mortar" played live in the studio.

The New York Times praised their knack for varying rock's basic signatures without leaving them behind. Weller would spend the next forty-odd years being described as the Modfather, and this is the record where the suit started to fit.
