About the album

Most bands follow a double album with a breather. The Clash followed London Calling with a triple, and agreed to take a smaller royalty so fans could buy it at a low price. Sandinista! came out in December 1980, 36 songs that run from punk and reggae into dub, funk, gospel, jazz, rockabilly, calypso, disco and early rap.

They recorded it over most of 1980 in London, Manchester, Kingston and New York, with Bill Price recording and mixing and reggae producer Mikey Dread adding dub versions and toasting. For the first time every song was credited to the band as a whole. "The Magnificent Seven" dips into New York rap and funk, "Police on My Back" is a breathless cover of Eddy Grant's Equals song, "Hitsville U.K." pairs Mick Jones with Ellen Foley, and "Charlie Don't Surf" and "Washington Bullets" carry Joe Strummer's sharpest storytelling. Lee "Scratch" Perry's echo-heavy influence hangs over even the straight rockers.

Slant ranked it among the best albums of the 1980s, and its genre-hopping has kept new listeners finding favourites on every side. Six sides is a commitment; think of it as three albums for the shelf space of one, which is the kind of maths we can get behind.
