Groundbreaking 1968 album from the Byrds, Sweetheart of the Rodeo, with Gram Parsons: "Hickory Wind," "The Christian Life" and "You Don't Miss Your Water."
On order
Sweetheart of the Rodeo is widely recognized as the first true country rock album, a hugely influential record that paved the way for the Eagles, Gram Parsons' solo work and alt-country.
With new member Gram Parsons steering them toward Nashville, Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman's Byrds traded psychedelic jangle for pedal steel, fiddle and banjo, recording much of the album in Nashville with top session players. Rock fans and country fans alike were surprised, and history proved them visionary.
Gram Parsons' "Hickory Wind" is a timeless, aching beauty, "The Christian Life" and "I Am a Pilgrim" are warm country gospel, and their take on William Bell's "You Don't Miss Your Water" is lovely. A cornerstone of country rock.
