Canadian-American legends The Band and their 1969 masterpiece, the Brown Album: "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down," "Up on Cripple Creek," "Rag Mama Rag" and "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)."
The Brown Album is one of the great American rock records, made mostly by four Canadians from Ontario and one man from Arkansas, steeped in history, folklore and soul.
Recorded in a pool house in the Hollywood Hills, the album blends rock, country, folk, blues and old-time music, with Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Richard Manuel trading voices over Garth Hudson's inventive keyboards and Robbie Robertson's guitar.
"Up on Cripple Creek" funks with clavinet, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is a powerful story-song, "Rag Mama Rag" is joyous, "Whispering Pines" is achingly lovely, and "King Harvest (Has Surely Come)" is a soulful closer.
Recorded in a pool house, though nobody seems to have gone for a swim.
