Sylvan Esso's 2014 debut as a 10 year anniversary 2LP set on black & white split vinyl, with "Coffee" and six remixes.
This anniversary 2LP set comes on black & white split vinyl in an all-over gold foil gatefold with an obi strip. It adds six remixes to the original ten songs, issued on the duo's own Psychic Hotline label.
Durham, North Carolina has given the world plenty, and a small bedroom studio there gave it this. Singer Amelia Meath and producer Nick Sanborn built a sound out of her layered voice and his beats, analog and digital rubbing shoulders in a way that felt brand new in 2014. Meath's voice does a lot of the heavy lifting, stacked and looped into harmonies, while Sanborn's low end keeps everything moving.
"Hey Mami," "Coffee" and "H.S.K.T." were the singles that introduced them, and "Dreamy Bruises," "Wolf," "Uncatena" and "Play It Right" fill out a lean, hook-filled set. Sides C and D hand those three singles to a sharp crew of remixers: Rick Wade, Dntel, Helado Negro, Hercules and Love Affair, J Rocc and Toronto's own Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene, each pulling the songs somewhere new.
The record set the duo on a path that ended with their own label, which is how this reissue comes to exist. "Could I Be" and "Come Down" bring a softer touch to the original sides. Ten years on, it still turns kitchens into dance floors, which is hard on the cutlery.
