About the album

Illinois was meant to be a double album of around 50 songs before Sufjan Stevens trimmed it down. When it became the record of the year for a great many people, he went back to his digital 8-track in late 2005 and finished 21 of the songs he'd set aside. The cover owns up cheerfully, declaring the contents shamelessly compiled by Sufjan Stevens.

He recorded most of it himself in Astoria, Queens, and at home in Brooklyn, with piano taped in a Carroll Gardens church. The title track is a bright banjo-and-horns sketch, "Dear Mr. Supercomputer" bounces through time signatures, and "Adlai Stevenson" and "Saul Bellow" add more Illinois portraits. "Chicago" turns up three more times, as an acoustic version, an adult contemporary easy listening version and a multiple personality disorder version, and "The Palm Sunday Tornado Hits Crystal Lake" is as vivid as its title.

Uncut put it at No. 9 on its best of 2006 list. The licence plate on the cover reads AKR 022, the album's catalogue number, which is a level of filing discipline our back room has never once managed.
