Steve Lacy's third album, "a record for guitar kids who love synths and synth kids who love guitars," with SZA and Erykah Badu along for the ride.
Oh Yeah? is Lacy's first album since the Grammy-winning Gemini Rights and "Bad Habit." SZA turns up on "Is It Cool?," Erykah Badu on "Pure Colour," and the whole thing hops between rock, R&B, breakbeat and trip hop in 40 tight minutes.
Four years after Gemini Rights made him a Grammy winner and "Bad Habit" made him unavoidable, Steve Lacy came back with something weirder, looser and a lot more electronic. Oh Yeah? was billed as "a record for guitar kids who love synths and synth kids who love guitars," and that's about right: fuzzy riffs, breakbeats, soul, psychedelia and trip hop all tumbling over each other.
Lacy produced it with a crew that includes Marius de Vries and the Internet's Matt Martians, and lyrically he swings from goofy to deeply sincere, sometimes in the same verse, chewing on fame, relationships and growing up in public. "The Feeling" and the title track are the hooks; "Pure Colour" with Erykah Badu is the slow-burn treasure.
