About the album

By 1977 Walter Becker and Donald Fagen had stopped touring and turned Steely Dan into a studio project with an endless revolving door of jazz and session greats. For Aja they called in nearly 40 musicians, Wayne Shorter, Steve Gadd and Larry Carlton among them, trying out different players on each song until it was perfect.

The results are as smooth and sophisticated as rock records get: "Peg" and "Josie" are slinky hits, "Deacon Blues" is a gorgeous ode to losers and dreamers, and the eight-minute title track features Shorter's sax and Gadd's legendary drum solo. It peaked at No. 3 in the US, won the Grammy for Best Engineered Recording, and has been used to test hi-fi speakers ever since.
