About the album

Billy Corgan sequenced this one like a baseball lineup, or a mixtape for a friend: here's the other stuff my band did that isn't on the albums. The songs reach back as far as 1989 and come from home recordings, quick studio takes and sessions for Gish and Siamese Dream, and Corgan pulled it together in a mad scramble of last-minute mixes.

"Soothe" was recorded in his bedroom, "Frail and Bedazzled" was cut in about an hour with lyrics written in a parking garage, and "Hello Kitty Kat" from the Siamese Dream sessions got a fresh mix after a call to Butch Vig. James Iha wrote and produced "Blew Away," the band's gentle take on Fleetwood Mac's "Landslide" became a radio favourite, and "Starla" stretches out for more than ten glorious, roaring minutes.

Corgan wanted it to flow the way a great tape does, from something in the Black Sabbath vein to something closer to Tom Waits, and it really does play like a proper album. Most bands keep their leftovers in a drawer; the Pumpkins kept theirs in a rather nice cabinet.
