Slint's 1991 post-rock landmark Spiderland: "Breadcrumb Trail," "Nosferatu Man," "Washer" and "Good Morning, Captain."
Spiderland is one of the most influential rock albums of the '90s, the blueprint for post-rock and math rock. Bands from Mogwai to Godspeed You! Black Emperor owe it a debt.
Louisville's Slint recorded Spiderland in just four days in August 1990 with engineer Brian Paulson, and it sounds like nothing before it: quiet, spoken-word passages that suddenly erupt into towering, angular guitar storms, with odd time signatures and an eerie, cinematic tension throughout.
"Breadcrumb Trail" is a mysterious carnival tale, "Nosferatu Man" lurches and crashes, "Washer" builds slowly and beautifully, and the epic "Good Morning, Captain" is one of the great closing tracks in rock. Mesmerizing from start to finish.
