Why you'll love it

This 7-inch puts two singles from RuPaul's debut album Supermodel of the World back to back, in a custom printed jacket. "Supermodel (You Better Work)" made RuPaul an international star, long before Drag Race.

About the album

Born in San Diego, RuPaul studied performing arts in Atlanta before moving to New York City. Before the Emmys, the Tony and the television empire, he was a fixture of the New York club scene with a record deal at Tommy Boy. The label put out "Supermodel (You Better Work)" as the debut single, and the catwalk chant made RuPaul famous around the world.

The flip, "A Shade Shady (Now Prance)," is the third single from the same album, a strutting house track built for runway turns. Together they capture the early 90s dance sound that made RuPaul a star and led to the MAC Cosmetics campaign in 1994, the first time a drag queen landed a major cosmetics deal. Both songs come from Supermodel of the World, issued on Tommy Boy in 1993.

Time named RuPaul one of the 100 most influential people in the world in 2017. Thirty-odd years on, people still sashay to "Supermodel" at weddings, which we think counts as a very long runway.
